A recent McKinsey report highlights a significant shift back to in-person work, with 68% of professionals working mostly in-office in 2024. Despite this shift, the intent to quit among employees remains high, with 39% indicating they want to leave their jobs. Moreover, satisfaction levels among in-person, hybrid, and remote workers are relatively uniform. A key finding is that companies are struggling to nurture collaboration and innovation, undermining the reasons to bring employees back to offices. Overall, employee experience and productivity do not strongly favor any specific working model.
"There is no clear winner when it comes to a working model that provides a high level of employee experience and productivity." McKinsey researchers write.
"Some sorting has already happened—people have voted with their feet and chosen their [preferred] working model," Brooke Weddle says.
