Following the pandemic, many millennials and Gen Zers moved from major U.S. cities to suburban or exurban regions, attracted by the flexibility of remote work and affordable housing. Areas with populations under 250,000 saw substantial population growth among these age groups, while larger cities experienced population declines. Interviews with several individuals reveal personal motivations for relocating, including seeking more space and a change in lifestyle. However, challenges persist, such as lengthier commutes and reduced access to urban culture and amenities.
I moved from New York City to Rockford, Illinois, where we bought our first home. It offered a different pace of life and a lower cost of living.
Moving outside big cities can provide more space and a less frantic lifestyle, but it often leads to longer commutes and fewer cultural experiences.
