There was a time I thought I'd spend the rest of my life in New York. After more than a decade in Manhattan, the streets felt like my own, and my identity felt entwined with the city. Even after having two babies on the Upper West Side, I was constantly plotting and planning on how we could make this lifestyle work long-term. And then, my husband and I stumbled upon our dream home in a distant Connecticut suburb.

I was conflicted at first about moving back to my hometown After living in Philadelphia for over five years, I was concerned that moving back to my suburban hometown would feel like a step backward. Moving away from home to bigger and better things seems like a rite of passage during young adulthood. But the lockdowns and isolation of the pandemic took their toll.

I moved from New York City to Rockford, Illinois, where we bought our first home. It offered a different pace of life and a lower cost of living.

Bedroom communities refer to residential areas with larger cities nearby to which most residents commute for work. These communities, sometimes also called commuter towns, can be an appealing option for buyers with specific needs.

Texas continues to see population growth, especially in its suburban areas, as residents look for more affordable living options beyond major urban centers.
