In response to the challenges posed by remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gates Foundation's HR team, under new leadership, had to navigate complex legal and operational issues. The need for a structured approach became evident as discussions with senior leaders revealed a tendency to prioritize employee care over important legal and operational considerations. This resulted in the establishment of a decision-making matrix centered on four critical quadrants: risk, cost, business impact, and employee experience, which not only addressed immediate concerns but has continued to guide leadership decisions.
The process led to the realization that we wouldn't be able to sustain this approach to supporting our employees and our business.
I built a simple decision-making matrix for balancing HR decisions across four quadrants: risk, cost, business impact and employee experience.
