Miyoko Schinner, the former CEO of Miyoko's Creamery, has transitioned from the business world to education at UC Berkeley. She co-instructs "Plant Futures: Introduction to Plant-Centric Food Systems" which aims to bridge academic learning with practical applications in the plant-based food sector. After a turbulent exit from her company involving legal disputes over her removal as CEO and allegations of discrimination, Schinner is now focusing on cultivating future leaders in sustainable food systems. This course, part of a larger initiative, partners with notable vegan brands, enhancing the educational experience with industry insights.
As we try to redefine what a better food system could look like based on plants, we can't just swap out the products. We have to really examine it from every angle and not repeat the mistakes that we've made in the past. And students are going to be the stewards of the future.
The Plant Futures Challenge Lab offers a course each spring and fall that bridges academia and the growing plant-based sector. We partner with well-known vegan brands such as Beyond Meat, Tofurky, Califia Farms and Daiya.
