San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has acquired new authority to address homelessness and the fentanyl crisis effectively. He signed legislation allowing his office to bypass the usual Board of Supervisors approval for related projects. The first initiative involves transforming a vacant retail space in the Tenderloin neighborhood into a behavioral health crisis center, which will offer 24/7 medical and psychiatric care. The center aims to assist approximately 25 people daily. This ordinance also enables city officials to seek donations for related efforts, enhancing the city's responsiveness to the urgent issues of homelessness and drug crises.
This is just a first step, Lurie said Wednesday.
The ordinance allows city officials to more rapidly lease the site to a nonprofit group that will provide 24/7 operations and care from doctors and nurses.
Lurie said the center will be critical in getting people connected with medical and psychiatric care.
