Lyft is set to introduce fully autonomous robotaxis powered by Mobileye to its app as early as 2026, beginning in Dallas, with plans to scale up in multiple cities. This initiative comes in the context of rising competition in the autonomous ride-hailing space, notably with Waymo partnering with Uber and Tesla's plans in Austin. Marubeni, a Japanese conglomerate with previous fleet management experience, will finance the Mobileye-equipped vehicles, enabling Lyft to maintain its asset-light business model while expanding its offerings.
Mobileye's got the technology and the relationship with the OEMs, and we have the platform, so it's the ownership of the fleet that we want to establish.
The plan is to scale to thousands of vehicles across multiple cities after Lyft's Texas debut, though the company has not shared exact launch vehicle numbers.
