A major new report has proposed turning the Commonwealth into a trade and security bloc and inviting Ukraine to join. This comes ahead of the upcoming biannual Commonwealth heads of government meeting in Samoa. The think tank Policy Exchange, which produced the report, emphasizes revitalizing the international club of nations, showing cross-party support in the Commons and gaining backing from notable figures like former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and Australia’s ex-foreign minister Alexander Downer.
Polling reveals significant public support for the proposed changes; more than three in five UK adults (63 percent) advocate for the Commonwealth to encourage the reduction of trade barriers among its members. Notably, nearly half of both UK and Australian adults (49 percent) believe Ukraine should be invited to submit a membership application. Support is even higher in other nations: 55 percent in Malaysia, 74 percent in Nigeria, and 75 percent in related polls.
