Raneem's law is a new initiative in England aimed at enhancing emergency response to domestic abuse, named after Raneem Oudeh, a victim of domestic violence. The law introduces domestic abuse specialists to 999 emergency call control rooms to ensure better handling of such cases. The pilot program is operational in select police forces with plans for wider implementation due to the tragic police failings in Oudeh’s case, which emphasized the need for systemic change to prioritize victim safety and effectiveness in handling domestic abuse reports.
There is no underestimating this at all. We can't do anything to bring them back. But their legacy, Raneem's legacy, will live for ever.
This will save people's lives; it's as simple as that.
Police showed a dismissive attitude and a lack of understanding about domestic violence in their dealings with Oudeh.
Domestic abuse specialists embedded in control rooms will help create force-wide cultural change.
