The Ministry of Justice confirmed that 37 prisoners convicted of breaching restraining orders were mistakenly released early, due to incorrect logging of their offences.
Former chief inspector of prisons, Nick Hardwick, emphasized the distress this incident causes for victims, highlighting it as a policy error stemming from outdated legislation.
The early release policy intended to alleviate prison overcrowding mistakenly included offenders who should have been excluded, raising concerns over the safety of the community.
The MoJ stated that they are working urgently to return the remaining offenders to prison, reinforcing their commitment to keep dangerous individuals incarcerated.
