Vicky Nguyen, an Emmy-winning correspondent, shares her journey from a refugee in Vietnam to a successful journalist in her new memoir, 'Boat Baby.' Born to parents who faced tremendous challenges, including a harrowing pirate attack while fleeing their home country, Nguyen's story is one of resilience. Despite their traumatic experiences, her parents emphasize positivity and gratitude. Nguyen's memoir serves not just as a personal recounting, but as a legacy for her daughters, ensuring they understand their heritage and the sacrifices made for a better future.
Something about my parents that I find really remarkable is that they don't see themselves as survivors of a pirate attack or people who've gone through trauma. They see themselves as people who were really lucky that nothing worse happened to them.
As a journalist, our job is to be a storyteller. And I wanted to make sure that I recorded some of these memories and experiences for my daughters.
