Kitchen islands are desirable in modern kitchens but require adequate space for effective functionality. Space constraints can lead to cramped cooking conditions, which hinder movement. Designers recommend a minimum of one meter around the island and 1.2 meters behind seating for optimal flow. While preferences vary slightly among experts, maintaining clearance is critical to ensure that the kitchen remains a pleasant space. Alternative solutions, like peninsulas, can be considered if space is limited.
As a rule of thumb, you need to maintain at least one metre of space around the island and 1.2 metres behind any seating to ensure ease and flow of movement.
While there is no strict rule, my preference is to design a kitchen island with 120cm of walkway space around it. However, if an island is a must-have and space is limited, we may reduce the clearance to one metre - but no less.
