Kelsey Matyas and her husband relocated from New York City to a 1920s Colonial in Maplewood, New Jersey, seeking a home with character. The dining room, a central focus of their design, was transformed from basic to whimsical and traditional. Using her parents' Ethan Allen dining set as an anchor, Kelsey aimed for a soft yet modern aesthetic, featuring a custom mirror to enhance the space's uniqueness without overwhelming it. Kelsey appreciates the emotional connection to her family's dining set and the home's history.
We came from a prewar building in the city, so we didn't want something cookie-cutter or builder-grade. That's part of the reason why we fell in love with this house.
It's the first room you see when you walk in. I wanted it to feel soft and whimsical with a traditional feel to it.
