A Taste of Oaxaca on Bank Street
Briefly

Designer Juan Carretero undertook a comprehensive renovation of a 750-square-foot apartment in a former General Electric factory. Despite the space's initial poor condition, the location appealed to him, leading to creative changes that improved both aesthetics and functionality. Carretero incorporated elements like pale-mint French doors reminiscent of his grandmother's home in Mexico, and he optimized the layout by adding features like raised doorframes and creating two entrances to the bathroom, making the apartment feel more spacious. His attention to architectural details and heritage profoundly shaped the design.
"I figured a way in which to live in a small space without running into each other all the time is always having two doors to a room."
"What I did was copy my grandmother's doors in her house in Oaxaca, Mexico. It was in my family for many years, and my great-grandfather converted it from a Colonial style into Art Nouveau style."
