Both warnings bring the threat of localised flooding and dangerous travel conditions. Met Éireann's forecast for this week is rather gloomy as the national forecaster predicts "generally unsettled conditions" with frequent and "above average" rainfall. Starting with this morning, there is persistent rain across the south and east of the country, drier in the west and north. That rain will clear northeastwards as the morning progresses, but more showers will arrive in from the west, becoming more long-lasting.

There were isolated showers around the country this morning with intermittent sunny spells. Cloud will gather in the west as the day goes on, bringing rainfall in western and southwestern counties, before moving inwards over the afternoon. Temperatures will reach between 4C and 8C in the afternoon, becoming slightly warmer in the night at 5C to 10C when it will be mostly wet with potential localised flooding in parts.

The national forecaster is warning of localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions in the affected areas as it predicts spells of heavy rain with possible thundery showers. Today is the last of the dry conditions as unsettled conditions are set to persist from tomorrow into next week. Met Éireann said that rain will increase from this weekend onwards, accompanied by a slight drop in temperatures.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain warning for Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, valid from 6pm today until 6pm on Thursday. The national forecaster has warned of significant rainfall accumulations from heavy showers and longer spells of rain, with isolated thunderstoms possible. Potential impacts may include localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions. Rain will be heavy to start off the morning in the north and east with thunder and some lightning, though this is expected to clear up quickly.
