Having completed his loan move from Aston Villa, Donyell Malen enjoyed a dream debut for AS Roma against Torino on Sunday, scoring the opening goal of the game in the 26th minute.
"I thought in the first half we got some really good opportunities, especially in the transitions, and we were very sloppy," Eustace told reporters. "The game could have probably been out of sight really, with the amount of chances we had on the turnovers, just if our final pass or the finish was better. That would have been great. However, in the second half, I felt we controlled the game a lot more. When we did get those opportunities, we were finishing the actions and getting shots on target, so to win 3-0 is really pleasing."
The early goal we conceded had an emotional impact, but we reacted well. We were very dominant and pinned our opponents deep into their own half. But Atlético kept things very tight between the lines and made it difficult for us. After half-time, we shifted play more to the outside and turned the game around. Unfortunately, we then gave them too much space after taking the lead and conceded another goal.
The preceding 90 minutes of last-16 action, however, had been quite eventful. Initially, it seemed as though Bayern wouldn't be thrown off their game again by the hosts' aggressive pressing. Just four weeks earlier in the league, the plucky Unioner had chased their opponents across the entire pitch like guard dogs chasing a postman. This time, the visitors were prepared, played through the Berliners' press and took control of the cup tie.
Barcelona recovered to secure a 3-1 win against Atletico Madrid as goals from Raphinha, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres handed the visitors their first La Liga defeat since August and extended the champions' lead at the top after an intense clash on Tuesday. The result puts Barcelona on 37 points, four ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, who visit Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through a set-piece. Bukayo Saka delivered a vicious cross from the left corner, which was headed past Manuel Neuer by Jurrien Timber. Arteta's men got better after scoring the opener, consistently winning the ball higher up the pitch. They came close to doubling the lead in the 31st minute, when Eberechi Eze's shot was just wide off the post after some impressive link-up play with Mikel Merino.
Manchester United succumbed to the first defeat of their inaugural Champions League campaign 5-2 against Wolfsburg thanks to braces from both Ella Peddemors and Lineth Beerensteyn and a late finish from Vivien Endemann. The temperature in Wolfsburg may have been close to freezing but the players on the pitch did their bit to warm up the 3,817 spectators in the Volkswagen Arena.
A header from Nick Woltemade, Serge Gnabry's strike and a Leroy Sane double put Germany firmly on course for 2026 World Cup qualification in their winner-takes-all final match of European Group A against Slovakia. Knowing only victory would be enough to finish top, Slovakia were overwhelmed by their opponents' press in Leipzig, falling 4-0 behind at half-time. Woltemade headed in returning captain Joshua Kimmich's cross before Gnabry slotted in from Leon Goretzka's pass and Sane struck twice from Florian Wirtz assists.
When the final whistle finally blew at Hayes Lane on Sunday, there was a sense that something had shifted in the perception of London City Lionesses. Their thrilling 4-2 win over Tottenham felt like not merely three points but a watershed moment in London City's debut Women's Super League campaign. It meant they climbed to the top half of the table with four wins in eight matches.
However, David Moyes' team responded with a much-improved display. Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane scored to secure the points, though the Toffees also had three goals disallowed for offside. The first of those incidents saw Thierno Barry have a close-range finish ruled out for Iliman Ndiaye drifting beyond the last man in the build-up, before James Tarkowski saw a thumping volley chalked off.
It's hard not to feel like we let this one get away. While New Zealand were impressive in the final quarter on Saturday, it was their worst performance in our last 11 meetings, which now stands at 6-5 in favour of the All Blacks. After a nightmare start with Tadhg Beirne's red card, we managed the 20 minutes with 14 men really well, deservedly leading 10-7 at half-time and 13-7 after 60 minutes.
Replying to India's 298-7, Wolvaardt led from the off and totalled 101 off 98 when she was eventually caught in the deep off the bowling off Deepti Sharma, who finished with 5-39. The support was not there for Wolvaardt, unlike that enjoyed throughout a team effort with the bat by India, as South Africa regularly lost wickets at the other end before being bowled out for 246 in the 46th over.
Atalanta and AC Milan played out a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at the New Balance Arena, with both goals coming in the first half. The opener came just four minutes in as a corner was not properly cleared and Samuele Ricci fired in off a deflection from about 20 yards out, getting his first goal for the club. At the other end, Ademola Lookman deservedly levelled with his first goal of the season.
West Ham turned in a dreadful and unorganised performance at a sparsely attended London Stadium as Brentford took the points. Keith Andrews' visitors were entirely dominant throughout as Nuno Espirito Santo's first home game in charge of the Hammers was abject. The hosts were run ragged by Brentford who had an incredible 15 shots in the first half alone - to West Ham's three.
Conor Kane jinked down the right flank and past Darragh Crowley as the full-back's cross found Thomas, who headed home for his third league goal of the season. The ex-Wales U-21 cap should have put his side ahead earlier on but made no mistake this time, taking full advantage of Cork's poor defending to go in at the break ahead by a goal.
History came crashing down on the heads of this Ireland side in Lisbon as Heimir Hallgrimsson's outfit took the journey from heroics to heartbreak and all in a matter of seconds. For 90 minutes, the Irish side donned the all-white strip which, for once, was not the flag of surrender on foreign soil and had battled hard to frustrate a Portugal side billed as possibly the best international team in Europe right now while never living up to that adulation.
