Portland, Oregon, the No. 1 spot to travel with pets, scored high on nearly every metric. According to the rankings, 52 percent of Portland's hotels are pet-friendly, which average $231.75 a night. It's also home to 451 pet-friendly restaurants, 5.7 dog parks per 100,000 residents, and 33 24-hour vets. Furthermore, it has an impressive walk score and has more than 90 dog-friendly activities scattered throughout the city.

Dog ownership has increased dramatically in many western countries. For example, in the UK there has been an increase from around 8.3 million in 2011 to 13.5 million in 2025. That means that approximately 29% of UK adults own a dog! At least partially this increasing trend of owning a dog is linked to millennials being more likely to have children later in life.

When puppies jump, we often reward them with attention, pets, and baby talk. But as dogs grow larger and stronger, that sweet jumping becomes dangerous. I learned this the hard way when a friend's "friendly" golden retriever knocked over her elderly neighbor, resulting in a broken wrist. Jumping is self-reinforcing behavior. Every time someone gives the dog attention for jumping, even negative attention like pushing them down, it reinforces the behavior.
