After prosecutors dropped criminal charges, the Town of Brookline agreed to pay $3 million to a former public school student who was allegedly sexually abused by former middle school teacher Larry Chen. After months of discussions, the town and the Public Schools of Brookline reached an agreement with the woman and her lawyer, agreeing to pay an initial $1.5 million and then five annual installments of $300,000 beginning the following year, according to Joe Callanan, Brookline's town counsel.

A South Bay school district agreed to pay $5.75 million to settle claims that a teacher impregnated a 15-year-old student at Leigh High School during a long-running illegal sexual relationship, and then forced her to have an abortion. The Campbell Union High School District's payout comes nearly two years after the allegations surfaced against Shawn Thomas, a physical education and social science teacher who also worked as a football and track coach at Los Gatos High School.
