Prominent Imperial County farmer Michael Abatti was arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of murdering his estranged wife, who was found dead in late November in Arizona. Abatti, 63, was taken into custody in El Centro, at about 3:20 pm, according to a news release from the Navajo County Sheriff's Office. Kerri Ann Abatti was shot and killed on Nov. 20 in Arizona's Navajo County.
Around 12:46 a.m. on May 4, Belt struck Braun, who was walking near Sepulveda Boulevard and 2nd Street, authorities said. Belt, who was arrested at the scene, had a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit and was driving on a suspended license from a prior DUI arrest, according to court records. Four passengers inside the car fled the area after the collision. Belt was released in June and then apprehended again months later.
A family was rescued over the weekend from a house surrounded by the surging South Yuba River, south of Donner Summit. The rescue happened on Sunday afternoon along the South Yuba River, the Truckee Fire Protection District said in a Facebook post. The family became trapped in their house after the river swelled amid "significant rainfall." A surfer avoided injury after being attacked by a shark Monday morning at Marin County's Dillon Beach, officials verified Tuesday. The attack occurred around 9 or 10 a.m. near the mouth of Tomales Bay, said Graham Groneman, a battalion chief with the Marin County Fire Department. The area is a known habitat for sharks where sightings aren't abnormal. "It's where shark experts do research on Great White sharks," he said.

Police identified Jamieon Miller, 19, of Tracy, as the suspect who violently assaulted the 88-year-old business owner during the robbery. Four people have been arrested, and police said they were seeking felony battery charges against three of them for their roles in an altercation that led to gunfire near a school last week. Sheriff's deputies Sevak Grigoryan and Christopher Matkin were first on the scene. Sheriff's office body cam footage showed them immediately stripping off their heavy gear and heading straight into the ocean; they swam about 75 feet offshore and found the couple struggling to stay afloat as the paragliding equipment sank them into the water. Two earthquakes struck the San Ramon region Saturday night, just one day after a swarm of six quakes shook the area, authorities said. The first earthquake, a magnitude 3.9, hit at 6:31 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey. It was centered three miles southeast of San Ramon and 3.3 miles north of Dublin. The second earthquake was a magnitude 3.0 that was centered 2.7 miles southeast of San Ramon.

After days of deliberation and faced with a forecast getting soggier by the day, Santa Anita officials have decided to postpone opening day of the 2025-26 race meeting from Friday until Sunday, Dec. 28. It's just the second time since 1976 that Santa Anita will not open on the day after Christmas. The other time was in 2019 for the same reason: wet weather. More than eight inches of rain are projected to fall between Tuesday night and Friday at Santa Anita.
