Rolling beige hills peppered with dark oak trees paint the horizon as a lone, wispy white cloud drifts leisurely to nowhere. There are more cows and horses than cars on this winding, backcountry Sonoma County road. As it bends around a corner, a white steeple from a former one-room schoolhouse spears the seemingly endless blue sky. Just ahead is an oasis where world-class pastries are sold from a wagon.
There was much to celebrate at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair's 50th anniversary gala on Saturday, when more than 1,300 attendees many donned in their sparkliest cocktail attire gathered to sample award-winning wines and food from some of the region's top producers. The highlight of the event, which took place at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, was the announcement of the top three sweepstakes wines in the professional wine competition.

A 22-year-old Sonoma County correctional deputy died Thursday evening after a suspected fall from her horse in Santa Rosa, the Sheriff's Office announced. Kylee Johnson, who joined the agency in June 2024, was off duty at the time of the incident. Around 6:50 p.m., fire crews responded to a medical aid call on Taylor Avenue near Stony Point Avenue. Officials said it was unclear whether Johnson died from the fall or from a medical event. An autopsy will determine her cause of death.

Local vintners and grape growers are joining forces to explore a possible solution for the wine and ag sector. Industry leaders have formed a steering committee to explore creating a Sonoma County Wine Improvement District, or WID. A handful of California regions already have WIDs in place. Livermore Valley, Santa Barbara County and Temecula.
