The author recounts a sleepless night when her phone's notifications disrupted her baby's sleep, leading her to realize her need for peace. Overwhelmed by constant messages and parenting demands, she decided to turn on 'Do Not Disturb' mode permanently. Three years later, she mostly keeps notifications off, which has brought her a sense of calm. The author acknowledges that her phone's demands can overwhelm her as much as parenting does, and actively managing notifications has significantly improved her emotional wellbeing.
In this moment, I make my change, swiping my finger down from the top right-hand corner of my phone... and hanging up my virtual door sign: Do Not Disturb.
That was three years ago, and I've only flipped the door sign back around on a few occasions... Instead, in the main, my notifications remain firmly, resolutely, off.
I do not want to be disturbed; nor, actually, do I want my phone to demand as much of my attention as my now toddler or his new baby brother do.
Sure, I'm probably a nightmare to get hold of at a moment's notice... but I'm immeasurably calmer now.
