The new iOS app Steppin, co-founded by Kayak's Paul English, aims to cut down on doomscrolling by blocking access to social media until users achieve their daily step goals. Users can decide how many steps equate to minutes of social media. The app is designed for various activities, with future capabilities to include yoga or pilates. Although marketed mainly to Gen Z, the app has attracted interest from all age groups recognizing the impact of excessive screen time on mental health.
The app ties social media access to physical activity, requiring users to achieve a certain number of steps each day before accessing apps like Instagram or TikTok.
Co-founder Paul English shared that while the app targets Gen Z, it's found interest across all ages, from parents wanting to limit their children's phone use to adults recognizing their own screen time problems.
