Despite Rising Inflation, Restaurants Are Having a Big Winter

This winter has brought extreme weather challenges to Denver, yet Barolo Grill, a renowned restaurant, enjoyed its most profitable start to the year since 1992. Owner Ryan Fletter expressed surprise at the bustling business during typically slow months, noting a significant jump in average customer spending. Rising costs and nationwide issues have not deterred diners, showing that many are willing to eat out more frequently and spend generously, hinting at underlying economic resilience despite overall consumer spending declines in the U.S.
At Barolo, even as menu prices have stayed the same, the average check has increased by about 10 percent... diners are having a nicer bottle of wine.
I am thrilled and surprised about our brisk business during January and February, which are typically the slowest for restaurants… this winter has posed even more challenges.
January sales at eating and drinking places were $98.6 billion, almost $2 billion higher than in January 2024 when adjusted for inflation.
Many restaurants report that business in both January and February was surprisingly robust, with the number of diners about 5 percent higher than last year.
