A Concord police officer discharged his firearm whilst pursuing a suspect who fled a traffic stop on Thursday night. Following the shooting, the suspect, 37, was arrested after hiding in a nearby area. Police utilized a K9 team and a helicopter to conduct the search. Notably, this incident marks the second time in 2023 that a Concord officer has fired a weapon, with the previous incident resulting in a fatality. The police seek further information but haven't released specifics about either officer involved.
"During the foot chase of the driver, an officer involved shooting occurred," police said in their statement.
The driver got away from the officer initially, and police said they used a police dog and had assistance from a Contra Costa Sheriff's Office helicopter to find the person and make the arrest.
It's the second time this year that a Concord police officer has fired his gun. An officer fatally shot a man on Feb. 18, after they confronted him stabbing a family member.
Despite repeated requests, police have not released the identify of the officer who fired in February or any of the body-worn or dashboard cameras from that incident.
