President Trump has declared that a 25% tariff will soon be imposed on European cars and goods. He accuses Europe of benefiting unfairly from trade while restricting US products. The European Commission countered Trump's claims, asserting the EU's role as a significant free market that has been beneficial to the US, facilitating trade and standardization. They vowed to respond decisively to perceived unfair trade practices, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a fair trade environment.
"We have made a decision and we'll be announcing it very soon, and it'll be 25% generally speaking, and that'll be on cars, and all of the things," Trump told reporters."
"They don't accept our cars. They don't accept, essentially our farm product. And we accept everything of them," Trump said, emphasizing his claims against Europe.
"The EU will react firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including when tariffs are used to challenge legal and non-discriminatory policies," said a commission spokesperson.
"The EU's single market has facilitated trade, reduced costs for US exporters, and harmonized standards and regulations across 27 countries," the European Commission responded.
