Bill and Jackie Friedewald, married for 57 years, attribute their healthy and happy lives to companionship, shared interests, and a nutritious Mediterranean diet. They met at the NIH in 1965, bonding over cars, and eventually married in 1967. Their love has deepened through shared experiences, including trips to Rome and Paris. The couple emphasizes the importance of simple daily joys and the Mediterranean diet’s focus on whole foods. This diet has consistently been recognized as one of the healthiest, which they attribute to their longevity and vitality in their 80s.
"We don't really do anything special, but every day is a special day," he said.
"We talked about cars. I told him I drove a Mustang and I didn't care what kind of car he had, I just hoped it wasn't a Corvette," Jackie Friedewald said.
Bill Friedewald said the couple "learned the value of a Mediterranean diet" at the NIH - although they enjoyed "cheat meals" such as fried chicken every now and then.
The diet prioritizes whole foods, fruits and vegetables, and legumes, while limiting processed foods, added sugars, and red meat.
