Every few months, the developer tool hype machine finds a new hero. In 2023, it was GitHub Copilot, the AI pair programmer that made autocomplete feel like magic. In 2024, the vibe shifted to Cursor and the new class of AI-first editors. And now, at least on X, Google's "agent-first" Antigravity is being pitched as the next inevitable thing. Meanwhile, the model layer keeps whiplashing.
AI has rapidly become a reliable coding assistant for many developers -- so much so that many are wondering about the future of the entire profession. Entry-level coding jobs are dwindling for recent grads as teams offload junior tasks to AI assistants; at the same time, experts cite the real limitations of these tools as proof that engineers will never actually become obsolete.
If you've used an AI coding assistant before, you've probably experienced vibe coding. You start with an idea, throw a high-level prompt at the AI, and wait to see what comes out. Sometimes it's close. Sometimes it's completely off. Either way, it often takes several rounds of tweaking to get what you actually want. That endless loop of prompting, generating, and fixing can get frustrating fast.

As part of an AI trial across government, more than 1,000 tech workers across 50 different departments trialed AI coding assistants from Microsoft, GitHub Copilot, and Google Gemini Code Assist between November 2024 and February this year. Figures published following a review of the scheme shows developers are saving around one hour each day, equivalent to around 28 working days a year.
