The IEA sees global oil demand falling by 80,000 barrels per day this year, compared with a projected year-on-year rise of 640,000 bpd in its previous monthly report.

"We just have not kept up with water supply and water infrastructure like we should have. And it's decades in the making," said Peter Zanoni, the city manager since 2019.

"With that corridor uncertain, itineraries have been cancelled and future plans are on hold."

The Panama-flagged Peace Gulf, a medium-range tanker, is heading to Hamriyah port in the United Arab Emirates, typically moving Iranian naphtha to non-Iranian ports for export to Asia.

The reopening of Hormuz is critical to the world's oil trade because its closure has resulted in the loss of millions of barrels of supply to global markets. A resumption would alleviate pressure on increasingly tight physical markets everywhere.

"The word 'choke off' is awfully tough," Trump said. "I'm not trying to, but, it looks like it's something that's just not going to be able to survive."

After the country's 10 million people had been plunged into darkness overnight, the Caribbean island's national power grid had fully come back online by 6:11pm (22:11 GMT) on Tuesday. However, officials said power shortages may continue because not enough electricity is being generated.
