The avocado seedlings enabled him to grow his farm income to close to 2m Kenyan shillings, with each mature avocado tree yielding 70kg annually. Improving farming methods and conserving the watershed has helped me to feed and educate my six children.
Want a reason to be optimistic? The global food system is showing some green shoots that suggest more sustainable farming practices are on the way. That's because farmers, companies, and consumers must all work together to create a more sustainable food system.
"Our lives have change beyond recognition since moving here in 2016" says Hannah, "it's certainly not been easy, but it's been a real adventure and we truly love it here, the way of life, the area, the food and wine and more than anything the chance to farm the way we believe it should be done - traditionally, with well cared for animals, not intensively reared, and producing food in a sustainable, responsible way."
"If it does work, I think there's some great applications throughout North America because this is underutilized agricultural land," said Daniel Badiou, co-founder and CEO of UKKO Robotics.
