Nordic dinner customs reflect unique reciprocity norms, emphasizing contained obligation over broad generosity in self-reliant societies.
It's only been on the shelves for a week, so we were surprised by the huge hype. It's not every day milk gets rock star treatment. We're really happy, of course, we believed in the product, but we weren't expecting this super demand. It sold out faster than we could say 'pink'.
Swedes celebrate the day before on Holy Saturday, with Easter services in the Swedish church often taking place in the evening. This tradition reflects a broader cultural practice of marking holidays the evening before the main day.
Every one of these items takes up space and energy, but the use of energy here in relation to clutter is actually two-fold. The stuff you own requires maintenance and management, and when you pass, this management becomes shifted along to someone else (whoever is responsible for sorting through your Earthly possessions).
Scrub kosher salt into the surface of your stainless steel pan, says Wirecutter, citing the French Culinary Institute: This is 'a hack to create a slippery surface,' by filling in all the little microscopic cracks and ridges in the surface of the pan, so that you can cook eggs in the pan and they will not stick.
In Denmark, chef Rasmus Munk doesn't offer dishes at the Alchemist restaurant. Instead, he whisks guests on an immersive dining experience combining performance, music, projections in its planetarium-like domed dining room, and, of course, food. Opened in 2019 at the site of a former industrial harbor area in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, Alchemist was named the world's fifth-best restaurant in 2025.
Instead, they practice something called "friluftsliv" - literally "free air life" - and in February, when winter feels endless, this practice becomes almost sacred. It's their secret weapon against the darkness, and after trying it myself during a particularly rough winter, I can tell you it works better than any supplement I've ever taken. The word itself sounds complicated, but friluftsliv is beautifully simple. It means spending time outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. Not despite the cold and darkness, but because of it.
Nothing starts the day quite like a plate of steaming pancakes or spicy chilaquiles, but every state has its own unique way of doing breakfast. We found the most iconic breakfast foods in every state, based on local favorites and dishes invented or popularized there.
A week's hiking in Jotunheimen national park (230 miles north of Oslo) last summer brought me tranquillity and peace. During four days of challenging hiking and wild camping through the area we saw hardly anyone else, having entire lush green valleys and still glacial lakes to ourselves. We were fortunate to have stunning weather throughout and, despite it being July, still had a reasonable amount of snow to traverse.
Although I often write about packing and have it down to a science, I decided to try a little travel experiment. Before our trip, I asked ChatGPT to create a packing list for seven days in Copenhagen. At first glance, it appeared to have great suggestions, and ones that were pretty aligned with my tried-and-true list. However, upon further inspection, there were some recs that I immediately threw out-plus, a few that I didn't realize were off-base until visiting Copenhagen for myself.
Valentine's Day is about expressing love for special people in your life. One way to do so is to pamper that person as much as possible. That can mean starting the day off with delicious breakfast in bed. Muffins can be prepared in advance and are easy to enjoy in hand for a breakfast that involves lounging and love. Blackberry Crunch Muffins marry coffee cake and muffin elements and tart berries for something that is equal parts breakfast and dessert.
Let's talk about holiday baking that goes beyond cookies! These are the festive winter bakes to try. The list includes an ultra fragrant gingerbread cake, a bright citrus loaf, and the perfect flourless chocolate cake. Few people love baking holiday cookies more than me, but a good amount of my favorite December baking happens outside the cookie platter. Think fragrant spice cakes, all things citrus, buttery, and bright - or deep, melty chocolate on the frostiest nights.
