"I think one of my most-played games is Pokemon Pinball, but the idea to make a pinball game came from Mario... he came to me and say 'JP, I want to make a custom engine for Playdate and we should make a pinball game.'"
I haven't played Crimson Desert enough, but we had everything that I've seen from Crimson Desert in the plans for that game. It was signed with a big publisher that has a lot of famous IPs...And then they just changed business direction again and wanted to focus on their existing IPs instead of new ones. They broke up with us on a text message, which I will never forgive them for.
Hotel Barcelona embodies a distinct voice. The game comes from two industry auteurs, Hidetaka Suehiro and Goichi Suda, known for their unconventional games that push the medium into wacky territories. Over the years, Suehiro, who goes by Swery65, and Suda, popularly known as Suda51, have been the creative forces behind unique and bold video games that blend genres.
It's more fun to destroy something that doesn't look like it can be destroyed. It is more fun to destroy that which is beautiful. Levels needed lots of additional visual flourishes, ranging from patches of flowers and fauna to ornate rock formation and snaking, overgrown trees to make the destruction feel like the showstopper it was meant to be.
The funniest co-op games always seem to involve some combination of chaotic countdown timers, awkward miscommunications, slapstick physics, or out-of-the-box ideas. Whether you're shouting at each other across the room in couch co-op or losing it over voice chat as everything falls apart, these games are designed to make you and your pals laugh, while still providing a solid gameplay experience.
There were lots of good stuff in this week's Convergence Showcase too, including another peek at Mouse: P.I. for Hire as we get to see one of the game's bosses for the first time. This first-person shooter with rubber-hose animation is set to arrive on March 19. There were other welcome announcements for me in this showcase. First, there was a release date for the Zelda-inspired adventure Gecko Gods.
The woods in Reanimal are full of surprises. You will encounter human cadavers that slither like snakes, gigantic talking pigs, and, at one point, a forlorn, supersized whale who seems resigned to an agonizingly slow death. These variously monstrous beings inhabit a realm that, though it looks like our own, seems to defy spatial logic: the forest leads to an oceanic expanse, which segues into a decrepit, towering city. It's like Aesop's Fables meets the nightmare visions of both Lars von Trier and J.G. Ballard.
Bluepoint then pitched a Bloodborne remake in early 2025, and was told that the numbers "made sense," but FromSoftware didn't want the remake to happen, the report claimed citing sources familiar with the matter.
Through the ingenious medium of an interactive scrapbook, we play as Connie, glueing in photos, notes and memories of her friend after years of separation. The game begins with several attempts to write Connie a letter, before we cut-out, stick and sort the story of their lives together.
The original The Long Dark was first released in its earliest form in 2014, following a successful Kickstarter the previous year. One of the rare examples of a truly purposeful early access development, the shiver-inducing first-person survival sim then released regular significant updates, each developing its core ideas in new and interesting directions, until its splendid 2017 final version. And all of them ensured you were always likely to be eaten by a wolf.
