In the interview, Tweedy dropped a line that's been echoing in my head, "Do not postpone happiness." This is so deceptively simple yet psychologically sharp, and it rings true to how I try to live my life. Most of us don't mean to delay joy. We tell ourselves we're being responsible: After this deadline...after the kids are older...After I lose the weight...After I finally feel less anxious...then I'll really live.
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. It was bracing language for an 8-year-old. Not only was I unclean, but even my best attempt at goodness was filthy.
The shoulds are a type of cognitive distortion (unhelpful thinking habit) that can lead to judgment. You may judge others, for example, 'They shouldn't act that way,' and yourself. In this post, we will focus on the shoulds you direct at yourself, though the strategies may be helpful for all cognitive distortions.
The following by John Steinbeck supports a well-lived life. "Greatness lies in the one who triumphs equally over defeat and victory." Steinbeck is encouraging us to risk fully participating in life, with both defeat and victory being inevitable. It means living life on life's terms, doing what we can to minimize being defeated by either defeat or victory. Let's look more closely at what it means to be defeated by defeat.
The Functionality of Boredom To answer this, we need to give voice to the functionality of boredom. Yes, it sounds like an oxymoron, but even the driest, dullest, most yawn-inducing moments have a purpose. First, boredom is a signal. It tells us when our current activities, lifestyle, relationships, or decisions no longer satisfy us-when our attention is unstimulated, or our curiosity is not adequately piqued.
Human psychology is characterized by a paradoxical structure: The same species that wages war, destabilizes ecosystems, and creates collective threats also develops moral systems, empathic abilities, cultural innovations, and an increasing desire for internal harmony. Some people may think that getting rich and owning a large house, several cars, and luxury clothes is the key to a happy life. Others would say that living a life full of adventures and traveling the world to see beautiful places and experience exciting activities is the key to happiness. Another way to find happiness in life could also be having a stable relationship and a cozy little home, shielded from the stressors of the modern world.
