For many years, PyCon US has relied on hotel booking commissions to help pay for our conference space. This helps us keep the event tickets affordable and to continue offering Travel Grants to community members who might not otherwise be able to attend PyCon US.
The shift was apparent. People had a stake in the outcome, and they acted like it. Ideas flowed more freely, teams spotted and solved problems earlier, and employees took pride in identifying and implementing improvements.
Youth 4 Youth was built by players who are currently living the journey. We're taking the doors we've walked through and holding them open for the next generation.
When power runs low, anxiety sets in. Psychologists often refer to this as battery anxiety, a stress response linked to the fear of losing access to information, contacts, or work tools. Attendees become less focused in sessions, check their devices more frequently, and start scanning the venue for somewhere to recharge.
Some are engaging and transformative, while others are incredibly boring. What exactly sets apart the ones where participants say, "Wow, we need to have these more often!" from those where participants are scrolling through their email, feeling pulled away from "real work?" While well-intended, there are subtle yet significant differences between mediocre retreats and those that truly deliver. Over the last decade-plus, I've designed and facilitated hundreds of retreats and training programs.
